WAEC is an acronym for West African Examinations Council, and it is an international examination body that conducts the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for English speaking countries in West Africa.
The good thing about WAEC results is that it is acceptable in most countries around the world. The main aim of WAEC is to check each high school graduate knowledge over the years spent in high school. Candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions to further their education are required to provide their WAEC result for confirmation.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) board was first set up in the year 1952 by the governments of Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia with Liberia joining much later.

Brief History of WAEC.
The idea for the creation of an examination body for English speaking west African countries was actualized in 1952, at the creation of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). However, the idea came earlier, and that was in 1948.
The series of events that led to the establishment of WAEC actually started four (4) good years, that was in the year 1948. It all started when these amazing bodies in these academic institutions, which are:
- University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate,
- University of London School Examinations Matriculation Council,
- West African Departments of Education,
met to consciously discuss on issues concerning education in West Africa, that will be controlled by West African scholars. The sole purpose of the meeting between these academic giants was to discuss the future policy of education in West Africa. Dr. George Barker Jeffery, who was the then Director of the University Of London Institute Of Education was charged with the leadership of the board responsible for the creation of WAEC, and he started off by visiting the affected countries and drawing up a plan recommendations.
He visited Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone lasted from December of 1949 to March 1950 (the visit to these four West African countries last just three (3) months), and he came up with a great idea, after which he submitted his report strongly supporting the need for the establishment of a West African Examination Council.
WAEC STRUCTURE.
WAEC is divided into three major parts, and they are:
